Who do you think you are?

“Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they’re yours.” – Richard Bach

This quote (from one of my favorite authors) has served me well for many years. We’ve all got dreams and goals we want to reach. But when we allow negative thoughts to dominate, we put ourselves at risk of never achieving the things we want most.

One of my clients is an amazingly talented writer who wanted to get more corporate clients. He had a long list of prospects, but kept putting off making the contacts. When we dug deeper, we realized that he was feasting on a regular diet of negative self-talk. The messages he sent himself ranged from “There are other writers better than you” to “You’re never going to make enough money to support your family.” On particularly tough days, he even succumbed to “You’re a loser.”

These incredibly powerful thoughts were keeping him stuck in the very negative position he was projecting. It took some effort on his part, but through a conscious program of replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, he’s been able to turn his situation around. When he told himself over and over again “You’re a great writer” and “You have a lot to offer this company,” he began to believe those statements. He was able to make his contacts with greater confidence and began to get new clients.

This isn’t voodoo; anyone can do it. YOU can do it. The book Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz is an excellent introduction to the power of positive thinking.

What thoughts are you thinking about your dreams and goals? How are those thoughts affecting your performance and your results?

Think of your most important goal right now. What are you trying to accomplish?

Then think about what messages you tell yourself about that goal every day. Are they positive messages, or are you sabotaging yourself with negativity?

People regularly ask me “How have you been able to do so many things in your life?” My answer is always the same. I set goals and I believe that I will reach them.

What one shift could you make in your thinking around your most important goal? Write down a positive statement you can tell yourself every day, and tape it up in front of you.

Try it. It works.
